Wednesday 09/26/13

Hi! Today was a great day! The students are doing awesome as far as grasping concepts and routine! Today in writing we worked on adding dialogue and inner thinking to our stories!!! The stories are turing out great! Also, today progress reports went home. Please sign, review, and return back to class. Please keep in mind that unlike Kindergarten children are getting letters grades. The majority of their grades is how well they perform on assessments that are completed independently (spelling test, math test, math quizes, reading test, sight word test, and their writing of stories).

P.S. We started Math centers this week and last year I had students bring their own headphones to use on the computer center. This worked out great to avoid the spreading of hair lice! If you send headphones with your child they will be kept in their mailbox with in a baggie only for them to use. If you choose not to, then please note they will use from the same 6 headphones that everyone else is using. Thanks!

Homework:
Spelling: rainbow write

Reading: practice sight words and practice reading

Thursday 09/19/13

Hi! Today was a great day during reading and writing workshop! Students are learning to write their own stories with their own ideas and writing across pages!!!! I was really proud of the growth they have made already since the 1st day of school! In Math we are working on subtraction word problems. Students can use whatever strategy they would like to solve the problem. I taught 3 strategies; draw counters, use fact families, and draw part to whole. The main idea here, is that students draw or show their work. It is not enough to simply give the right answer... they need to show their thinking that is going on inside their heads!

Homework:
Spelling: Practice test!

Reading: practice reading and practice sight words for quiz

Math: Worksheet on word problems

Tuesday 09/10/13

Hi! Today was another great day! We read the story When I was Little for reading. Then we wrote our own ideas about things we did when we were little and how much we have grown. In Math we worked on making addition sentences for the sum of ten. I noticed in some students homework last night that many students did not use to color crayons to illustrate the addends. Please read the directions carefully and use 2 different color crayons so your child can visual see why 6+4=10.  In writing, we are working on learning to add more details to our pictures, to add more words to our sentences, and really pushing ourselves to do the things real writers do!

Thank you for all your help! Can't wait to meet you all on Thursday for Open House at 6:30pm!

Homework:

Spelling: 5 really good sentences and 5 pictures

Math: 2 workbook pages on adding

Wednesday 09/04/13

Hi! Today we read Quick as Cricket! We also started assessing for TRC to find each students individual reading level. We will do this 3 times this year. In Math, we are working on problem solving with addition. This was a challenging skill and we will keep practicing this. Word problems are challenging because students need to be able to read the problem and find out what the problem is asking them to do. So please help your child practice these with their homework tonight.

Homework:

Spelling: Day 2 - Write 5 sentences using 5 different words from the Master Copy List of the week, then draw 5 pictures that match your sentences

Also, the children visited the school's library today and checked out books. This book can stay at home for 1 week and return them back next Tuesday for Library. You can also use this book for nightly reading for the reading log.
