Hi! Tomorrow we will test Spelling words only. We are saving sight words for next week, since this words are really important and will help your child with testing. Also, today report cards went home! Please review, sign, and return report cards to class.

Hi! I am excited to introduce the newest member of our classroom, Ms. Lonis! Ms. Lonis attends the University of Phoenix and is completing her student-teaching in our classroom. Some of you may recognize Ms. Lonis, as she has been working as a teacher-aide at our school for the past 5 years. In working with her in previous years, she has a shown to have a true passion for teaching and works hard with students. Ms. Lonis will be student-teaching with us through the month of May. We are excited to have her in room 104!

Thursday 01/27/14

Hi! I just realized I forgot to post yesterday! Sorry!

Today we had an exciting day in writing workshop! The students got to choose what animal they are going to research and learn all about to write their own teaching book!!! We also started our TRC testing for winter reading levels, these tests take about 20-30min per student so it will be awhile before all students are tested. Please keep practicing reading every night.

Phonics: workbook pages 217-220

Reading: Practice reading and sight words test will be on Monday!

Tuesday 01/21/14

Hi! Today was a wonderful day in 1st grade! Everyone was on task and we completed everything on our schedule! We did a really cool Science lab with chocolate chip cookies to understand how rocks are formed. Ask your child what they learned about rocks! 

This week there will be NO spelling! Due to the short week.

Also, I will test sight words on Monday to allow for enough time to master the words.

Hi! Today we finished our Penguin Unit! We took ALL of our test too. Please check your child's test folder and review, sign, and return test on Tuesday.

Thursday 01/16/14

Hi! Today we continued our research on penguins! We are learning how to use the table of contents to locate information from nonfiction books quickly. In Math we reviewed concepts for Chapter 7. Our test is tomorrow! Please review with your child how to compare numbers by doing tonight homework together! Also, please make sure your child is ready to test for sight words and spelling words.

Hi! Today was an exciting day! In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday we read Martin's Big Words and did a fun hand painting activity! We also have a new addition to our classroom. Our new students make 29 in room 104! The students were excited to see a new face and it was wonderful to seem them greet and be so helpful in helping Ociel get adjusted. Welcome Ociel!!!

Tuesday 01/14/14

Hi! Today we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the importance of his peaceful marches and protest to end segregation. In writing we add our fine details and checked for capitals and punctuation to our "How to" books. In science we are learning about rocks and students were able to examine different types of rocks looking for features to describe their sizes, shape, and color. 

Homework: 
Spelling: 10 sentences, make sure to add capitals at the beginning and end-marks at the end of each sentence

Math: 2 workbook pages on problem solving

Hi!

Today we had perfect attendance!!!!! Things run so smoothly when everyone is here. We also started our research project as we learn how to read nonfiction text. The students really seemed to enjoy the new class books and reading all about animals! I also tested the students for their sight words from last week, and most of them did awesome!!! Thank you for helping your child!

Thursday 01/09/14

Hi! Tomorrow we will test spelling words (I will be assessing easier than normal looking for phonetic spelling as oppose to 100% correction. Due to the short school week). I will not assess sight words until Monday also due to the short week. I will be out of school all day, away at a network meeting, therefore the student will have a substitute. There will be no Math quiz tomorrow.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome back! In order to build rigor in curriculum, today the studenst received a new Spelling Routine for the rest of the year! Please take a look into your child's Spelling notebook for the new changes. In math we started our new unit on comparing numbers. In  reading and writing we will be working with reading and researching by using nonfiction text to eventually teach others what we learned by writing our own all about book!

Weekly Words:
