Thursday 10/17/13

Hi! This short week just flew by!!! Tomorrow is Test Day! Please make sure your child is ready to be tested on sight words and spelling words for the week. Today we read "The Best Mariachi in the World" for Family Literacy Night! We learned about character change and using text details to support our answer. In math we are working on making a ten frame to add by observing which number is bigger to start the ten frame and then filling it up with the second addend. Most students seemed to grasp this concept pretty easy. Lastly, please make sure if you are interested in signing up your child for after-school you do so by 1) completing the form and sending it back or 2) attending the SES registration with more info on the blue handout that went home today. I will be teaching Newton if you are interested in having your child in my after school program.

Wednesday 10/17/13

Hi! Today we worked on using a ten frame to add. We also worked on using mentor text to study and analyze what real writers do to make their stories juicy. We borrowed ideas from real books that we could try in our own writing. Then in the afternoon we worked on our Monsters Inc. performance!

Also, I just noticed that I mistakenly typed the wrong spelling words on yesterday's post. I just edited and updated yesterday's post with the correct words. Sorry!

Lastly, I will be working for Newton after school program if you are interested in signing up your child for SES!

iREAD

Today I added iRead to Students' Websites link to the left. Students can access another great reading program to help the become stronger readers. I also taped inside each student's orange folder their username and student ID number for the password. Please note that the password needs "Cps" before the ID number to access iRead.

I apologize for the very long and confusing password/username but this was completely out of my control and was provided by the computer teacher.

Username: (letters)
Password: Cps(follow by ID number)

Thursday 10/18/13

Hi! So today I pulled small groups to reteach adding with doubles. I feel that most students understand how to use doubles but have a hard time knowing when to use doubles plus 1. We worked on observing the number sentence first and ask "Hmm are the numbers close together on the number line?" If so, I can use doubles plus 1! Today's homework will reinforce deciding adding with doubles, doubles plus 1, or count on. Reminder that tomorrow is assessment day! Please work with your child ensuring they know their spelling and sight words!

Homework:
Spelling: practice test

Reading: practice sight words and practice reading

Math: 2 worksheets on adding with count on, doubles, and doubles plus one

Halloween Assembly Costumes

You don't have to buy a new costume of a monster. I encourage you to make one! Think of it as a family project! Think of patterns that don't go together, furry vest, boots with fur, hoodies with eyeballs swen on, funky hats, ect.  I am sure the thrift store and/or closets are filled with hidden treasures!

Excited to see what you all come up with!

P.S. It was brought to my attention that some parents don't want to dress their child up has a monster for the Halloween Assembly. Please know that participation in Halloween assembly is voluntary. If you don't want your child to be on stage just let me know.

Wednesday 10/09/13

Hi! Today we took a quiz in Math to see how we are doing with adding with doubles (quizzes will be sent home Friday). There are a handful of students who are struggling with this. So, if you feel like your child is behind, don't feel bad. I will pull that handful tomorrow for small group instruction to re-teach doubles again. However, I did speak to the entire class about how it's their responsibility to raise their hand if they don't understand something. We worked on using words like "Ms. Juarez, I don't get it, can you explain it some more?" It's so important that children learn to ask for help if they aren't understanding.

Tuesday 10/01/13

Hi! Today was an "okay" day in 1st grade. The students in general were just too chatting, which made us behind in Reading and Math Centers. We discussed how we need to focus during lessons, be polite with each other, keep our hands to ourselves, and raise our hands to share our thinking. They just weren't the best they can be. I am sure tomorrow will be a better day.

In reading, we read "Mathew and Tilly" and discussed how sometimes accidents can happen with each other and how we can work on forgiveness. In Math we started the new Chapter 3 and learn how we can add numbers in different order. Also, those of you that are interested in registering for SES After School programs, there will be an informative meeting tomorrow after school. Please check your child's folder for the lime green flyer.

Homework:
Spelling: 5 sentences

Math: worksheet on adding

Reading: practice sight words and practice reading
